MANDELA DAY

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

The inspiring words; of South Africa’s former president, Nelson Mandela, was the motivator for our Mandela Day activity. Our desire was to spend time with children and teach them the basic foundation of mathematics: how to identify and make shapes.

The Rethink Team first made lunch packs for the children at Christine Revell Children’s Home. The packs included sandwiches, treats and a juice. After an enjoyable snack-time with the kids, the team went on to teaching the children shapes. Colour and physically bending bright and fluffy pipe cleaners, were the engaging factors that stimulated the minds. The smiles and special moments between the kids and the Rethink team, stirred our hearts.

We were so privileged to spend time with the children. It reminded us to be fearless and playful as well as kind and appreciative. The team of carers who look after these children have a demanding job as there is often only one carer to look after over twenty children. We were humbled by the experience and it freshly reminded us of why we love what we do.
